Whilst adding further cards at this level, students will continue to develop their understandings of previous levels, specifically addition and subtraction. Multiplication and division are taught side-by-side and must be added together, the ‘easier’ cards being added first. For example, introducing the x2 and ÷2 would come first, as the 2 times table is the easiest and therefore the first for most children to learn.
When comfortable with these two cards, the x5 and ÷5 would come next, followed by the 3s, then the 4s. This is the progression of understanding for students. Do not overwhelm them by introducing too many wildcards too soon! Use cards they are comfortable with and one or two to challenge them. As they become comfortable with those wildcards, add a couple more, and so on.
