How the Numero® Math Card Game Teaches Fractions, Decimals and Percentages (including Indices)

Learn all about proper fractions, numerators, denominators and mixed numerals in a fun and interactive way

These cards need to be added progressively and only as students become aware of how they can be used. Ideally, only 1 or 2 cards at a time.

Start by adding some simple fractions with a numerator (top number) of 1. This ensures that, in essence, the student only needs to divide a number by the denominator (bottom number). This will help a child lose their fear of learning fractions (‘often put on them by parents’) and become comfortable with division being the first part of using fractions. The numerator of 1 reminds students that whatever the answer from the initial division of the denominator is, it is then multiplied by the numerator (1) to result in the answer, eg 8 x ½ is really just 8 divided by 2 (denominator), then multiplied by 1 (numerator). Students soon understand that the numerator of 1 doesn’t have to mentally be processed, because it is ‘1’.

The next step is the more complex fractions (eg ¾, ⅔, ⅗). This then progresses the learning to include the multiplication of the different numerator, eg 8 x ¾ is really just 8 divided by 4 = 2, followed by 2 x 3 = 6; hence 8 x ¾ = 6. A comfortable way to learn how to work with fractions in a fun way!

Like all levels of Numero, start with the easiest ‘simple’ fractions and add one or two at a time, as the children become ready for them. The first four fractions to include should be ½, ⅓, ¼, ⅕, as these can be compared with and connect to the division cards already being used. More difficult ‘complex’ fractions can be added next, with the last cards to be added being the mixed numerals (1½ & 2½).

Key Learning Outcomes for Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Learning Fractions

  • Teaches and reinforces the process involved in using fractions.
  • Teaches and reinforces the process involved in using decimals.
  • Teaches and reinforces the process involved in using percentages.
  • Develop understanding of connections and patterns between fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of inverse operation, now including fractions.
  • Develops understanding and recall of tables and how they connect to fractions.
  • Continues the development of higher order understanding of mathematical language, with words like multiplication, division, fraction, decimal and percentage.
  • Students learn to convert between decimals and fractions and apply this to situations where they need to mentally compute with these numbers.
  • When calculating percentages of a quantity, they know when to use division or multiplication.
  • Continue to increase speed of recall of tables, connections between numbers and mathematical processes.
  • Flexibility with numbers will continue to improve.
  • Create a deeper understanding of strategic thinking around numbers and processes.
  • Further develop skills in estimating through deciphering and understanding information and numbers to improve decision making.
  • Realise how statistics and probabilities play a part in strategic thinking.
  • Further develop higher order planning, thinking ahead, reactive and proactive decision making.
  • Understanding how zero and negative numbers can be used with the more complex fractions, decimals and percentages.

Numero® makes learning fractions, decimals, percentages and indices engaging by showing students how to work with them through real-world applications and problem-solving strategies.

Learning Indices (Including roots & Squares)

These cards will be the last ones added to the deck. It will be the four cards of √N, ³√N, N² and N³, keeping in mind that the letter ‘N’ simply represents the number to be used with this process. For example; √N on a number 9, is √9 = 3, and so on.

Whilst these processes do not appear in the curriculum until upper primary, year 6 in most curriculums, there is no reason they cannot be added to a student’s deck if that child understands indices and is capable of using these cards. Like in the previous level, do not include all these cards at once. We recommend adding the √N and N² first, followed by the ³√N and N³ once comfortable with the first two.

  • Continuing reinforcement of all processes and skills learnt in previous levels.
  • Develop an initial understanding of indices.
  • Learn how indices still allow for inverse operation.
  • Further develop understanding and recall of tables and how they assist with indices.
  • Learning is enhanced as children connect these numbers to various arrangements on the cards.
  • Continues the development of higher order understanding of mathematical language, with words like square root, cube root, squared and cubed.
  • Students will develop their ability to work with squared and cubed numbers.
  • Students will develop their ability to work with larger numbers and see how to move between small and large numbers quickly.
  • Continue to increase speed of recall of tables, connections between numbers and mathematical processes.
  • Flexibility with numbers will continue to improve.
  • Create a deeper understanding of strategic thinking around numbers and processes.
  • Continue to develop skills in estimating and assumptions within and about numbers.
  • Continued exposure to how statistics and probability play a part in strategic thinking.
  • Further develop higher order planning, thinking ahead, reactive and proactive decision making.
  • Learning how zero and negative numbers will respond to indices.
